A quick and rough page of Fanfotos - all thumbs are
clickable for a larger image.
All these pictures are taken from a collection of waifs and strays I acquired
over the years of doing fanrooms and the like.
Who knows whose they were in
the first place!

Some pictures from John Jarrold are here
Some pictures from Jim Linwood are here
Graham Boak, Leory Kettle, John Hall, and John Brosnan - at the 1973 Bristol Eastercon. Incredible as it seems these two pics were not taken consecutively - see that Boak has changed his clothes in the intervening period.
Brian Aldiss, Robert Holdstock, and Lisa Conesa - the 1972 Chester Eastercon. Aldiss and Holdstock were in bitter competition for Ms Conesa (hardly surprising) and Holdstock is in a bit of a sulk because Aldiss' eminence is putting him in pole position. Robert's high times were yet to come. |
Christine Atkinson and Rochelle Dorey - party at Greg Pickersgill's flat in Lawrence Road, Ealing, the early 1980s. Haven't seen or heard anything of either of them for years - but I've still got most of the books seen on the shelf behind! What does that tell about life, eh. |
Arthur Thomson and Patrick Neilsen Hayden - interview in the Fan program at the 1987 Brighton Worldcon. One's dead, the other isn't. |
ATom and James White - Brighton 1987
Harry Bell in my bookroom at the Lawrence Road flat - discovers a porn heap. |
I think this is a Silicon in Newcastle - John Piggott (last seen on Canvey Island), Harry Bell, Irene Bell (his then wife), Leroy Kettle, David Langford. |
Tynecon 1974 - Harry Bell, Gerald Bishop, Irene Bell. |
1973 Bristol Eastercon ? - Mark Adlard, Bob Shaw and George Hay |
Sadie and Bob Shaw |
Bob and Sadie Shaw |
Brian Burgess - an Eastercon Fancy Dress (loosely speaking) |
Brian Parker at Lawrence Road - yes, he really did always look this seedy and grubby, it wasn't just the usual result of three or four days heavy drinking. |
I used to know where this was - early 1970s anyway - unknown, John Hall, Thom Penman, Ritchie Smith, Greg Pickersgill, James Campbell. |
Rog Peyton, Ken Bulmer, Ray Bradbury. |
Andrew Stephenson, obviously appalled by something either Bryn Fortey or Greg Pickersgill have said. Bristol 1973 |
Greg Pickersgill, Peter Roberts, Darroll and Rosemary Pardoe - Bristol 1973 |
Howard Rosenblum - Bristol 1973. Say no more. |
Simone and Tony Walsh - Bristol 1973. |
Brisol 1973 - the lounge wasn't the most comfortable ever at an Eastercon. At least there wasn't sawdust on the floor... |
Simone Walsh and David Langford - sometime in the late 1970s. |
Robert Holdstock, John Hall, Bryn Fortey - Bristol 1973 |
This is what happens when you've had too much fun - on the way back to the station from the Bristol Eastercon, I just sort of, well, fell over. |
Peter Roberts, Greg P, Mervyn Barrett (standing). John Brosnan - Bristol Eastercon 1973 |
The Burlingtons, featuring Graham Charnock on right. 1975 Eastercon Coventry? |
Greg Pickersgill, Leroy Kettle, James Campbell - Chester 1972 |
Lisa Conesa and Ian Williams. She was quite short. |
Chris Evans, almost famous auth, discovers the joys of nitrous oxide. |
Christine Atkinson, Paul Turner, (?), Malcolm Edwards. Other fans of reknown lurk in the background. It's incredible the sort of people who used to be at those parties. |
Opening ceremony, Mexicon 2 1986 - now that's a bunch of people you'll never see sitting together ever again. |
Catherine and Gregory having a really great time at the 1995 Worldcon. Note absence of the people who were supposed to be running the fan area. |
Almost all of Welsh fandom (plus an obvious Norman) in Chris Priest's flat sometime in the mid-1980s - Greg P, Rob Hansen, Alan Dorey, and Chris Evans. |
A winning team, believe it or not. We used to play football at the Silicons in the 1970s. How unlikely is it that any of these characters could do so today at all, never mind on the same team. |
Bryn Fortey - Performance Poet |
Mike Glicksohn at John Brosnan's room at 62 Elsham Road, West London. Looks pissed doesn't he? |
Greg P, barely thrown out of school, and Bryn Fortey at the 1971 Eastercon. |
Roger Does It - at a Novacon, I think. Quite a long time ago. |
Robert Holdstock contemplates the future - it is round. He was very young at the time. |
Dave Chopping's wife (Margaret?). Greg P, Peter Weston, Simone Walsh - a Novacon at the Imperial, so early 1970s. Peter is implementing an early version of the Fannish Theory of Sheep. |
Jack Marsh. He wasn't impressed by anything much. But he was a right guy. |
John Jarrold. Pints all round then? Is that whisky or gin? |
John N Hall. He used to wash his hair in Fairy Liquid. |
Someone else and Ken Slater - at a Beneluxcon I think. |
Hard to believe such an innocent face etc etc |
Jim Linwood and Arthur Cruttenden - an Eastercon, but where? |
Greg Pickersgill in happy childhood on Bala Lake - totally in command but no crew. Nothing changed then eh. |
The only one of these people who actually wanted to leave his wife never actually did - can you tell who it is yet? Left to right - Bryn Fortey, Christine Edwards, Malcolm edwards, Simone Walsh, Greg Pickersgill, Leroy Kettle, Christine Atkinson. Seems like a dream now. |
Pat Charnock and Malcolm Edwards -probably not caught doing anything they'd be ashamed of. |
Oh its Paul Turner again with Malcolm Edwards and Steve Higgins - early 1980s. It was at this party I told him it was time for his fannish initiation and first he had to go out and buy a pack of butter. |
A Novacon - everybody at it except Roger. And maybe Andrew Stephenson and Peter Roberts at the right. The blonde girl is Donna Munro. Peter Nicholls front right, Gerry Webb busy at rear - possibly not talking! |
John Brosnan, John Piggott, Bryn Fortey - 1975 Eastercon. |
It's Uncle Peter - was this at the 1971 Worcestercon? |
Registration - 1975 Eastercon, Coventry. Things you'll never see again and can barely credit ever happening. Pat and Graham Charnock, Christine Edwards, Christine Atkinson. |
Robert Holdstock has a manly stride through the bar at Worcester 1971 |
This is Hip - Pat Charnock, Brian Hampton (old Bristol SFG fan), John Brosnan, and Graham Charnock. |
Judy Blish and Rob Holdstock shake it on down - can John Jarrold be far behind? |
Greg P, Helen Starkey, and Lilian Edwards. I look back on this with genuine incredulity. |
The Tynecon 1974 convention committee - Harry Bell, Ian Williams, Rob Jackson, Irene Bell, Ian Maule. They were BNFs in their time, you know. |
Malcolm Edwards, Peter Nicholls, Pam Bulmer. |
John Brunner and James Blish |
Audience - Tynecon 1974 |
Audience - Tynecon 1974 |
Audience - Tynecon 1974 |
A wild Holdstock loose while Don West looks on in amazemement. Sheila Holdstock and Christine Atkinson know what comes next. |
Ken Bulmer, Bob Shaw, James White |
Anne McCaffrey, Samuel R Delany, John Brunner |
Tynecon 1974 |
Tynecon 1974 - welcome - Jackson, Maule, Williams |
Where is this? That's Mervyn Barrett at centre, Belgian fan Michel Feron at right, with Bob Shaw, Roje Gilbert, Eddie Jones and various other MNFs of the day scattered here and there. |
An interesting thing - a 3d picture created by Vince Clarke, built up on a piece of board with plaster and a little plastic figure. This repro doesn't do it justice - its a genuine bit of fannish folk art from the 1940s. |
Welsh fandom of the good old days - Greg P, Rob Hansen (once the funniest man in British fandom), Mike Collins, Bryn Fortey |
Pickersgill, Fortey, Mike Collins. |
Worcester 1971 - Greg P, Leroy Kettle, Jean Finney (at the time Robert Holdstock's girlfriend and astonishingly out of place at a convention). |
Bob Shaw, Greg P and Jeanne Gommoll - somewhere in the USA, a long time ago. |
A startlingly young Julian Headlong, probably at a Beneluxcon |
