IRAQ

M80

A commonly-exported South Korean design, made of Corlon plastic. It is known generally as the 'M80' in Iraqi use, but this may not be a correct designation. (See also URUGUAY)

There is also an Iraqi-made (?) helmet of similar appearance and composition known commonly as the M90. See below.

Variant of the South Korean ballistic fibre helmet -

Query - is this an Iraqi-made version of the SK helmet - the alignment of the triad of chinstrap rivets seems slightly higher up the side for example.

Ballistic plastic helmet, design of South Korean origin.
Has been referred to as M80-03, this may not be correct.

"Superficially very similar to the more well-known M80 (see first helmet above) this has a completely different liner and chinstrap. The fabric is coarser, with a more 'woollen' texture, and liner is apparently easily removable using a system also seen on later US M1 helmets, though it is also fixed permanently to the rear rivets and would have to be torn free for replacement. The chinstrap has a very rudimentary catch."

M90

HPIM7357.JPG

Variously believed to be a locally made Iraqi product, or an import from South Korea. Or elsewhere.

HPIM7358.JPG

The applied rubber rim is commonly believed to be a protection against delamination, which these reputedly poorly-made helmets are apparently prone to.

The notorious 'DARTH VADER' helmet

Quite obviously modelled on the fantasy film character it is nicknamed after, this quite useless helmet is an embarrassment to helmet users, collectors, and science fiction fans everywhere.

It is sometimes difficult - for those who have not had one in hand - to actually comprehend the shape and size of this helmet, so here for comparison is one set between one of the Danish M23 series and a member of the Swiss M18 family.
